PS5 Firmware 5.00 (22.01-05.00.00) and PS4 Firmware 9.50 released – As always, avoid updating if possible

Sony have pushed PS5 firmware 22.01-05.00.00 (a.k.a. 5.00)  and PS4 firmware 9.50 a few hours ago. This probably goes without saying, but with the proof of PS5 kernel exploits a few months ago, and PS4 9.00 Jailbreak available, as much as possible we advise you to not update your console if you’re waiting for a hack. If you own a PS4 on firmware 9.03/9.4, it’s also advised not to update. Easier said than done of course, but if you’re hoping for a PS5/PS4 Jailbreak in the future, that’s what we recommend.

PS5 22.01-05.00.00. What’s new?

PS5 5.00 and PS4 9.50 are pretty major updates introducing new features, that follow a beta test from PlayStation.

From the official blog announcement:

Thanks to support from our beta participants, we’re introducing some fan-requested features to our global community today, like the ability to create or join Open and Closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 consoles. On PS5, we’re also bringing UI enhancements to Game Base and Trophy cards, as well as accessibility features like mono audio for headphones.

PS5 players with accounts registered to the U.S. or U.K. will be able to test drive a Voice Command (Preview) feature that lets them find and open games, apps, and settings, as well as control media playback with their voice (English language setting only).

PS5 22.01-05.00.00 & PS4 9.50. Should I update?

In the light of revelations a few months ago about potential PS5 kernel exploits, and the history of PS4 Jailbreaks I would urge anyone interested in hacking their console to at least postpone these updates if they can afford it. Recent jailbreak releases almost always happen for older firmwares, following disclosure to Sony. By upgrading to the latest firmware, you pretty much guarantee you will shoot yourself in the foot for a potential future Jailbreak reveal.

Of course for gamers, giving up on online services for several weeks can be problematic. You might want to get two consoles: one for gaming, one for hacking. But with the global shortage of PS5s going on, getting a PS5 is already almost impossible, let alone 2 of them. If that’s a possibility for you though, go for it.
