Wii U gets a firmware update, almost 3 years after the previous one

Wii U Firmware Update 5.5.5 released

Nintendo have just pushed update 5.5.5 to the Wii U (yes, you read that correctly), almost 3 years after they had last updated the console firmware.

Firmware 5.5.5 Brings “stability” according to the official changelog, and we can only wonder at this point what kind of stability is required for this console. (Which brings the question: do they still make new Wii U games in 2021?).

Improvements to system stability and usability

  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.

Technically, the previous firmware was 5.5.4. Apparently released specifically to Europe, it was released for GDPR compliance in 2019. But for most people, 5.5.3 was the last “relevant” update, and that was in 2018, almost 3 years ago.

How to update Wii U firmware

Should you want to update, your Wii U will probably be able download the update automatically while in standby mode. Alternatively, go to System Settings > System Update.
